Across the Tagus River, accessible by ferry (Cais do Sodré) and by train (Across the 25th of April Bridge), toy can visit two important spots on south margin: Cacilhas and Almada.
Cacilhas, a former parish that belongs to the municipality of Almada, has been a key place in Portuguese industry, namely in Shipbuilding, where Lisnave – Lisbon’s Shipyards, was once responsible for building most of the Portugue commerce fleet. Nowadays, the industrial cosmopolitan feel is still in the zone, but the shipyards have given its place to nightclubs, bars and restaurants where the best grilled fish can be tasted.
In the busy city of Almada, particularly in the outskirts, right next to the 25th of April Bridge, there is an iconic statue of Jesus with its arms stretched: the Cristo Rei.
Rising 113 meters above the river, the 28-meter statue of Jesus sits atop a 75-meter gate. Inside there is a sanctuary and it is possible to climb to the top of the gate, to the base of the statue, getting and amazing view of Almada, the Tagus River and Lisbon.
