Built in 1998, for the Lisbon World Exposition (Expo ’98), and designed by Peter Chermayeff, the Oceanário de Lisboa (Lisbon's Oceanarium) is the largest indoor aquarium in Europe, with a 20000 square feet exhibit, made by 30 different aquariums, filled with more than 7,5 million litres of water.
Don’t miss the chance to visit four different habitats, from the Antarctic coastal line, to the Tropical India coral reefs, and see more than 8000 animals and plants from more than 500 different species.
The main attraction is the central aquarium, with a capacity of 5 million litres, containing sharks, manta rays, tuna fish, tropical fish and sunfish, among many others.
Besides fish, there are also otters, penguins, seahorses and a beautiful tank of corals and sea anemones. The Oceanário has already had more than 16 million visitors and is a must see in Lisbon, for tourists and Portuguese alike.
