Lisbon means fado. And that is particularly true in certain parts of the city, where this traditional portuguese music doesn't hide and makes itself heard in all its splendor.

Fado means tradition, but there is also room for inovation. The fado house Povo, at Rua Nova do Carvalho, 32, right in Cais do Sodré, is an example of that, bringing a new twist to this old sound.

This cultural "tasca" is a place where you can eat and drink while listening to the new fado artists of the country that are paving new ways for this musical heritage.

They normally take residence here for at least 12 weeks and, while doing so, show off their skills to the costumers. You can see it (and listen) for yourself every sunday, tuesday and wednesday at 21h00. If that fails, try again on thursdays, fridays and saturdays, when the show starts at 20h00.

And beware: what they do to fado they also do to food, which means you can eat the most traditional flavours of Portugal in a whole new way. Here, olive oil, wine, bread and cheese are reinvented and gain a new dimension, making this the perfect mix between old and new.
