Back in 1998, Portugal hosted a World Exposition dedicated to the Oceans. For six months, millions of visitors from all over the world came to Lisbon to see the pavilions of (almost) all the countries of the planet. For the city, it was an opportunity to transform a large industrial site, composed mainly of giant and decrepit facilities to store gas and oil, into what became the most modern residential and commercial district of Lisbon. The very sites where the Web Summit is occurring - The Meo Arena pavilion and the FIL exhibition center are part of that legacy. The shopping mall Vasco da Gama was built in the site of the World Fair main entrance. Connected to the metro an train stations, it differs from most malls because of the glass ceiling with running water, conceived to give the impression of the visitor being under the sea. You will find most international stores in there, and many choices to eat fast. A few esplanades on the top floor can give you a lunch regarding the Tejo and the Vasco da Gama bridge. We don’t know if conqueror Vasco da Gama would be pleased to give his name to a mall, but, after all, it was because of him that trade between Europe and Asia thrived.
